Cate Tomlinson Weaves a Dark Pop Tale of Fatal Attraction in "The Ring of Fire"


Cate Tomlinson’s new single is full of sultry storytelling and pure power. “The Ring of Fire” is about the age-old tale of fatal attraction, with Tomlinson’s sharp pen painting our narrator’s romantic demise. This track is another taste of her upcoming sophomore EP, The Side Effects of You, out December 6. Recent singles include "Like The Boys," "MY EX FRIEND," and "Half Lover," and "The Ring of Fire" brings through a haunting side of Tomlinson’s passionate songwriting.

"The Ring of Fire" sees Tomlinson crafting the story of a young woman going to hell for the one she loves, bringing drama and mysticality to her crisp pop sound. She was inspired by the potent imagery of Barbara Kingsolver's novel Demon Copperhead, where the main character’s described as having a “head of fire.” In this new fiery single, Tomlinson turns that memorable description into a dark pop anthem.

More than just painting a picture of toxic love, “The Ring of Fire” “explores the dangerous allure of giving yourself completely to someone or something, even when you know it might destroy you." Sonically, “The Ring of Fire” embodies its title while incorporating the right details. The slight twang in Tomlinson’s voice suits her extremely well and nods to the one and only Johnny Cash. The claps that build up to the final chorus are welcomed, signaling the climax of a tense classic film.

Fans will be excited to hear Tomlinson’s upcoming collection of impactful pop bangers, sharing stories that embody the tumultuous transition that is coming into young adulthood. “The Ring of Fire” is another contribution to that multifaceted experience, one that pushes limits and explores the darkness of love.
