Don't Worry About LEW, She's Too Sexy to Be Sad

In an industry full of uncertainty, one thing is for sure, singer-songwriter LEW is too sexy to be sad and too damn talented to be put in a box. After moving from coast to coast, pivoting from country to pop, and reclaiming her creative independence, the songstress illustrates her transformation on her latest EP, TOO SEXY TO BE SAD. In this four-track body of work, she set out to leave behind labels and the molds of conventional pop, creating a sound that feels free, honest, and daring.
The record's opener and title track, "TOO SEXY TO BE SAD," is a manifesto of power, vulnerability, and authenticity. The track opens with a neon-candy-coated collection of beats and synths that bring to mind memories of pre-games in friends' apartments before a big night out. The singer reflects on a partner who had taken over her life and eventually did her dirty with infidelity and all sorts of nonsense. On the pre-chorus, as the instrumentals build delicious tension, she muses, "I'm not taking years off of my life, life/ For someone I'm not even sure I like." The hook explodes with an addictive, danceable energy, showing LEW deciding not to wallow in a slump or pity herself, but instead to embrace her freedom and enjoy life.
On new additions "WAIT ON ME" and "BORING," LEW continues to alchemize her pain and experiences into pop-driven, smile-inducing tracks. On the former, she attempts to maintain her composure while falling head over heels for a new crush. It's infectious and bubbly, with teasing lyrics like, "It's so obscene the way that you look at me...So shoot your shot, show a girl what you got, honey," and "Got a bite like a gin tonic/ Gonna love when I hit on it/ Steal your heart like a pickpocket." Meanwhile, the latter track is a racing reflection on choosing between a "good boy," who could provide stability but is boring, and a "bad boy," who brings intrigue and danger, but also potential chaos and heartbreak.
The record's closing track, "PHANTOM LIMB," is not only a personal favorite but a standout effort that ties the project up in a bow. LEW shines as she reminisces on a relationship that was a clean break, but still haunts her from time to time. Its raw emotion and relatable themes, like lingering memories despite having moved on, are supported by euphoric production featuring swoon-worthy vocals, string accents, catchy beats, and twinkling effects, driving home the mantra, "Even when I feel you there/ Doesn't mean that I still care about you."
