Eloise’s “Drunk on a Flight” Feels Like a Sunday Morning Reflection
Iâve officially decided to enter my sleepytime tea bear era. Itâs January, itâs cold outside, and all I really want to do is drink something warm, wear something warm, and sit by something warm. But whatâs a cozy night without the right music? Today, London-based artist Eloise drops her first single of 2023, âDrunk on a Flight,â and itâs the perfect tune to put on some slippers, turn on the fireplace, and sip a cup of tea to.
In three minutes, Eloise manages to transport the listener to a Sunday morning with her soothing vocals, warm instrumentals, and heartfelt storytelling. (To clarify, not the hungover kind of Sunday morningâthe fresh flowers and pastries and coffee kind.) While Eloise has the unique capability to find the perfect blend of jazz instrumentals with folk storytelling, âDrunk on a Flightâ offers subtle notes of pop, perhaps welcoming us to a new era for the singer-songwriter.
Although the sonics of âDrunk on a Flightâ feel like a warm hug, its lyricism is vulnerable and somber, yet wise and hopeful. Eloise lets the listener sit by her side as she unpacks the time her and her partner broke up hours before taking a flight. Over piano riffs and acoustic guitar chords, Eloise sings, âWell I got so drunk on that flight / I couldn't tell day from night / But I didn't want to.â At only 23 years old, Eloise carries a maturity within her tone and delivery that feels refreshing to hear.
In the official music video, directed by Balan Evans, we watch as Eloise sits at an airplane terminal next to a couple mirroring her past relationship. Through dreamy colors, film grain, and a simple narrative, the video perfectly captures the gentleness of the song with the turbulence of the story at hand.
âDrunk on a Flightâ is the title track of Eloiseâs album set to release this Spring. Discussing the significance of the album and its title track, Eloise explains, âThe biggest moments of my life have revolved around flying somewhere: flying away from something or flying to the thing that changed my life. The morning that me and my first boyfriend split up, I got in a taxi to Heathrow and that was the beginning of my first ever tour.â
Iâm excited to hear the full project, but until then, Iâm going to make myself a cup of tea, turn on the fireplace, and listen to âDrunk on a Flightâ on repeat.
