Harrison Gordon has never been afraid to get messy, but “Like Me Less” might be the Illinois band’s most emotionally unguarded release yet. Arriving as the latest preview of their upcoming sophomore album BLISS, out September 4, the single transforms self-loathing into a cathartic punk anthem, pairing jagged guitars with lyrics that refuse to soften the reality of living with your own worst thoughts.

From the opening verse, Harrison Gordon captures the quiet weight of depression through painfully ordinary details. Whether it’s “A seven-dollar beer that tastes like old man sweat” or a sink overflowing with dirty dishes, the song paints a picture of someone trapped inside their own head without relying on dramatic metaphors. They find honesty in the every day, making the emotional spiral feel so fucking relatable.

That vulnerability reaches its peak in the chorus. “No one knows me, I barely know me / And that’s the way it oughta be” gives way to the devastating realization that “No one hurts me like I hurt me.” It’s the kind of refrain that begs to be shouted back in a packed venue, turning deeply personal struggles into something communal. Rather than placing blame elsewhere, Harrison Gordon confronts the uncomfortable reality that the hardest battles are often the ones happening internally.

The band’s own description of the song adds another layer to its impact, explaining that “Like Me Less” explores projecting personal struggles onto the people around you while navigating a depressive episode alongside someone who seems to be just fine. “’Like Me Less’ is about having issues with yourself and projecting those problems onto other people,” shared the band. “‘Whatever black mold breeding and spreading over your soul needs to stay dormant and unaddressed if you hope to keep anyone around.’ It was written about how it felt to go through a depressive episode while living with another person who was operating completely fine, ‘No one knows me, I barely know me, and that’s the way it oughta be.’”

The accompanying music video, directed by Hot Mulligan’s Tades Sanville and Alex Scalzo-Brown, is a body-horror-inspired visual that follows the band on a messed-up visit to the doctor. It mirrors the song’s themes of self-loathing and projection, balancing punk urgency with emotional honesty in a way that feels unmistakably Harrison Gordon and offers another compelling glimpse into BLISS.
