Laufey Taps Into Her Anger In Breakup Anthem “Tough Luck”

Laufey has been steadily growing her fan base for years, bringing the smooth sounds of old school jazz to the pop music sphere. Continuing on her mission to bring jazz to Gen Z, the Chinese-Icelandic star offers up her latest single, “Tough Luck."

“Tough Luck” is the second single from Laufey’s upcoming album A Matter of Time. The previously released “Silver Lining,” is simple and sweet, with Laufey proclaiming to her lover that she’d be happy to follow them to hell, as the silver lining would be that the two of them would be together. “Tough Luck” is in direct contrast with the sweetness found in “Silver Lining," as Laufey finds herself fed up with her relationship, informing her partner that his time is up.

Laufey doesn’t mince her words, calling her soon-to-be ex out for his self-inflicted victimhood as she sings “You think you’re so misunderstood / The black cat of your neighborhood,” at the end of the first verse. Not impressed with her partner’s victim complex, Laufey continues into the chorus informing him “Tough luck my boy your time is up / I’ll break it first I’ve had enough / Of waiting til you lie and cheat / Just like you did to the actress before me / Oops, she doesn’t even know / You won’t be missed, I’m glad to see you go.” Not only is Laufey frustrated with the problems in her own relationship, she’s aware of her partner’s sordid past, and refuses to be just another girl he cheats on.

The cutting lyrics are accompanied by swinging, jazzy pop beats that come to a crescendo in the song’s bridge. The chipper instrumentation highlights Laufey’s confidence and assertiveness. She has taken matters into her own hands and won’t be embarrassed by this man; instead she will lay out his shortcomings for all to see.

Laufey’s flawlessly constructed narrative in “Tough Luck” already has us itching for more, and we can’t wait to see what else this new chapter in her career has to offer.
