LIA LIA Takes an Ethereal Ride to the Other Side in "I Ride My Bike"
German-Chinese indie artist LIA LIA puts us in a trance with the release of her latest single, "I ride my bike." The latest single from her highly-anticipated new EP ANGST, out October 27, sees the rising artist shift gears from her more aggressive and blistering punk leanings to softer, more atmospheric stylings framed by ethereal vocals and whispering instrumentals.
The intimate single opens with echoey vocals accompanied only by a guitar's warm yet sparse strums. LIA's haunting whispers detail her journey of riding her bike through the night until morning, finding freedom in a place beyond our current existence, as she watches her "bones dissolve" and becomes a wandering specter. The short song soon gains underlying layers of moody synths that lurk beneath the surface of the otherwise iridescent and lulling track.
"'I ride my bike' is a lullaby for late-night travelers," shared Lia. "In the hours after dawn until sunrise, while you're commuting on a train, or almost falling asleep in the subway, looking out of the windows of a cab, walking the empty streets of a sleeping city, or riding a bike. In the moment when you're alone with your thoughts. That's the best time to listen to 'I ride my bike.'"
Alongside the single's release is a stunning music video featuring the artist traversing wide open grass fields on her bike while wearing angel wings. Camcorder footage of sunsets and picturesque nature shots quickly take on a more foreboding atmosphere as a quick cut of LIA lying motionless, facedown on the ground, presumably after crashing her bike takes ahold of what was originally a carefree bike ride.
The release of "I ride my bike" follows an insane period of growth for Lia Lia. After blowing up on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, the latter of which saw her following grow from 10k to over 170k over just a few months, her unique visuals and artwork have collected millions of views. She was even invited to the UN to be a guest on their podcast to discuss her art and other sources of inspiration.
