10 Questions With Matilde G on Her New Single "Hypocrite"

Growing up in Rome and currently based in Singapore, Matilde G has that international pop sensibility for emotions, a pizzazz for big hooks and choruses that work no matter what continent she finds herself serenading. Still a teenager, her monumental voice and sound defy her youthful age, leading us into a bit of a wormhole over her latest release, "Hypocrite." Per usual, we crossed that date line to learn more about her evolving sound, love of Lady Gaga, and more.

Ones To Watch: Who is Matilde G?

Matilde G: I’m Matilde G, an Italian pop singer-songwriter and performer based in Singapore. I’ve always loved singing, for longer than I can remember. I was pretty good at singing, nothing spectacular. I was shy and had no stage presence. That’s when I wrote my first song around the age of 13 and decided that this was going to be what I was going to be doing for the rest of my life. I worked extremely hard on my weaknesses and strengths. That brought me to where I am today, achieving my goals one by one, learning and experiencing this life as a singer more and more every day, loving it more and more every day.

What is "Hypocrite" all about?

"Hypocrite" was inspired by a very trashy relationship where I wasn’t respected and treated correctly, I started wondering if I was doing something wrong, I felt bad because I didn’t know why I deserved to be treated like this by boys. That’s when it hit me. I’m not the problem, if these people aren’t happy with themselves they can make you happy. I realized that other people’s actions don’t define who I am, only me and my actions define who I am. In response to that, I came out of this situation stronger than ever, ready to live my life at its fullest, knowing that I’m not the wrong one, but these hypocritical people that are all talk and no actions are. "Hypocrite" is an anthem for people like me, who haven’t been treated correctly, an encouragement to move on and to be happy knowing that we don’t need these trash people in our lives, we only need ourselves.

This is a big pop tune, with a video to match. How did you settle on the overall vibe?

I went into The Kennel studio one day and I felt like getting some anger out. I looked at the producer and the other co-songwriters and told him, "make me a beat I can yell to”. Well, a couple hours later, I was literally yelling “crash and burn” living my best life.

Any collaborators? Who produced the track?

I went to Stockholm to write and record this song. The producer, Karl-Oskar Gummesson, is absolutely amazing and he was very patient to make all the changes I required. I co-wrote the melody and the lyrics with my "sister" Josefin Glenmark-Breman and Isak Alvendahl, who are very talented and experienced.

Obviously, you are evolving as a person. How do you feel your sound has evolved?

During these years, I’ve grown a lot as a musician and as a person. I’ve lived many new experiences that have then translated into my music. I went from mostly ballads to electro-pop to "Hypocrite," and much more very unique sounding music to come up… I’ve clearly defined my style and my personality as a person and in music. I am stronger, I am more confident, I am ready to get vulnerable with my music. And this journey starts with "Hypocrite."

Can we expect more of this style in the future, potentially on an upcoming album?

Definitely, I have defined my style lately and am excited to show you guys all the new projects I’ve been working on, potentially an album! The problem with albums is they are very very expensive to make, and market, and as an independent artist at the moment, I don’t have the budget to do so. (Desperate call for labels and investors!) But that is definitely a big medium-term goal for me!

Besides this excellent single and video, what else should we be on the lookout for?

Trust me when I say my upcoming stuff is very unique. I have a lot of plans for the future, concerts, collaborations... I’m full of surprises, but I don’t gatekeep! You guys will find out soon enough.

What's inspiring you right now outside of music?

Sports. I've been finding physical exercise inspiring, helping me focus on my goals, keep a decent balance in my life, burning some calories and getting rid of all my extra adrenaline HAHAH. My latest passion: boxing :))

Any ambitions for 2023?

Honestly, I have so many ambitions, I could write an essay. But my main goal right now is to find a team that believes in my project as much as I do. I can't do what I have in mind by myself. A good team makes a big difference.

Musically, who is new but making all the right moves? Who are your current OnesToWatch?

My two and only big loves: Lady Gaga, and Charlie Puth. So different yet so similar. Lady Gaga is on point with music and style, always. And Charlie Puth’s tikTok is admirable. Such good content, and very handsome! I love him and we will write a song together one day :)
