STUMPS Are Looking Brighter Than Ever Even Through the Darkest Times

“We like the idea that our band can tackle quite serious things and have a lot of fun at the same time.”

A band yielding power within just a three-piece, Sydney’s STUMPS are resurfacing memories with just one listen. Mimicking the feeling of a spontaneous night out in town, this trio’s ability to create a distinct sense of euphoria and nostalgia is unbeatable. Bringing their Brit-pop and 90s indie-rock agenda to the stage, Kyle, Merrick and Jonny are extending their hands to the crowd with relatable and welcoming tunes guaranteed to make each and every listener belt the lyrics word for word.

When asked whether they’ve gone through any conflict, it’s surprising to hear that they don’t, except for self-inflicted accidental bumps on stage brought upon by their enticing energy that can’t keep them still. Attached to one another by time and a bond bought by shared music passions and unbound freedom, the three have been long-time best friends dedicated to making music for the people and with the people.

“We’ve been best friends for a long time and I think that we try to extend that to the community as much as possible. We've got fans of ours that whenever we see them at a show, we know all of their names. Their super lovely people, and just up for a chat and a beer. We talk about life. We try to be as welcoming as we possibly can and be a little bit ambitious and try to lift each other up.”

If you need a pick-me-up or just a reason to let yourself loose then STUMPS are the answers to your prayers. With music that can confront the seriousness in life with benevolent cheer, their tunes are uniquely joyous to the ears. It’s their emotionally charged melodies packaged within grand soundscapes, powerful drums and vocals that brings the audience together in a single anthem. It’s perfectly suited for a live gig.

While they’re all about being sure about their references in each song, the trio trust their listeners and fans to take it as they please - no expected motives, just pure bliss. “I'm sort of happy for them to make it up as it goes along. I'm of the opinion that as soon as the song's out, it's no longer mine anymore…It’s up to the audience to take it. We all have such complex lives.”

“A song might remind them of something that we didn't even imagine that song to remind them of. It might have a really important meaning for them. We never really set out with an intention for a song. We try to make it as specific to the emotion as we possibly can but not really try to direct it in any other direction.”

With so much potential ahead of them, STUMPS are showing what they’re made of - announcing their second album Arcadia out January 19, 2024. Leading with their newest single “Nobody’s Home” we can expect this EP to blur the boundaries of indie, dance, pop and rock. The tones of the new EP are set to explore feelings that have never been felt before, leaving listeners contemplating life but in the most joyous sense.

Not only are we impressed by the three, we’re excited to see what’s to come for the remainder of 2023.
