NIKI Crushes Deep in New Single “Tsunami,” Further Surfaces Forthcoming Album ‘Buzz’

What’s it like to have a crush? A serene, aerial melody carrying the emotional truths you tell yourself across raw, unfiltered soundwaves bursting from the floor below. Nicole Zefanya, better known as NIKI, cocoons this overwhelming feeling in a new track aptly titled “Tsunami.”

The song, taken from her forthcoming album Buzz, set to release August 8, is an unguarded telling of a crush in motion—its realization, coping, and enjoyment. Each verse and chorus is advanced by a trotting snare and dribbling piano notes toward pounding synthetic bursts which, in sync with NIKI’s pastel vocals, draw out familiar emotions.

For an artist with vast wavelengths of talent, opening for major acts like Taylor Swift and Halsey, and touring for the greater part of the last two years, songs of reflection and raw honesty feel like the natural next chapter. In “Tsunami,” we see an artist diving inwards to find the riches of past or current feelings brought to the surface and light.

The endearing and truthful nature of the track is enhanced by its music video, set on a tranquil beach and encased in film. Among candid smiles from the artist and waves sliding ashore, we see the romantic-bright gloss that the composition aims to put center stage.

As for the listeners of this rising Indonesian artist, a treasure chest is delivered, with this song being just one jewel within. “I'm going under / Storm, lightning, thunder,” NIKI sings, emerging with a new phase to explore, one that should further advance an already deep musical trajectory.

To discover this next installment in NIKI's career, start with this story of newfound emotion set to tender and unruly sounds.
