PROM Set Themselves Free in Lush New Single Ahead Of 'Private Dream' EP
LA and Chicago-based indie pop outfit PROM, comprised of Tatiana Hazel, Dylan McBrayer, and Robert Kuesel, celebrate the announcement of their sophomore EP, Private Dream, with the release of their latest single, "Set Me Free." The track is a sonically mellow and lyrically moody effort that balances elements of light and dark as the band searches for stability and freedom amid a reality that isn't what they bargained for.
"Set Me Free" opens with a collage of lilting, fuzzed-out guitar strums and understated bass lines before switching gears to layers of glitching synths, pulsating high hats, and twinkling beats emerging from the ether. Hazel's gentle vocals mull over the consequences of life's decisions and how sometimes the challenges life sends your way can make it hard to find meaning or purpose. On the poignant chorus, she croons over the lush production, "Everything I know now/ Isn't what I thought it'd be I don't wanna go on/ Living in my wildest dream."
"We just wanted to make something that felt natural and took our time to settle into a sound that made sense for us," shared the band. "We never want to repeat the same project twice, and this one felt like the next progression into what we always wanted PROM to sound like."
The accompanying music video, created by Rena Johnson, is a dynamic visual with nostalgic, DIY elements, featuring collage-cut photos of the band members amid fuzzy VHS footage. The colorful creation matches the juxtaposition of the dreamy, whimsical essence of the track's production and the existential crisis that the band paints so vividly.
The single will be featured on the band's upcoming EP, Private Dream, out February 9 and marks a new chapter for the band. While their previous releases have mainly included guitar and live instrumentation, this forthcoming body of work consists of an electronic-forward sound full of breakbeats and experimental electronic influences. While their shift towards electronic production is new, their trademark existentialist songwriting remains stronger than ever.
