Rachel Prancer is Going Anywhere But "backwards" on Captivating New Single
âMy name is now Rachel Prancer, and I couldnât be happier.â This is how Rachel Prancer re-introduced herself to the world. Having previously released her debut EP, Ways Parted, under the name âspiderblush," Prancer realized that she was ready for a new name that represented her better as an artist. Her new name honors her late friend JD and marks the start of a new era for the singer-songwriter.
Prancer released âsee through,â her first single under her new name, on August 30th and is following it up with her latest single âbackwards.â In âbackwardsâ Prancer reflects on a relationship that has run its course. The song features acoustic guitar and twinkly percussion alongside Prancerâs tender, airy voice. The stripped back production allows for Prancerâs lyrics to take center stage. The songâs chorus is a moment of realization and acceptance for Prancer as she sings, âYou donât like me / And I don't like you too / Why are we fighting / Why are we trying / Some things just donât work / Although you want them to.â Melancholy flows through the song as Prancer comes to terms with the end of the relationship.
In the lead up to the songâs release, Prancer shared pages from her journal that included lyrics from âbackwardsâ alongside a longer entry that read,
âI admire a lot of things Iâll never have, never be. I write about my regrets, my wishes, my dreams, and I explore everything I donât understand. I try to learn and grow, but sometimes I let myself take steps backwards. I miss everything, every age Iâve been, every place, every friend Iâve lost or drifted from. These are pieces of art. Iâm not always looking back but I think itâs something I rely on too much. Other times, I canât remember what happened at all. Itâs good to look back and learn. I guess Iâm still searching for something. Thank you for searching with me.â
Prancer has a way with words and a vulnerability that allows listeners to feel a little less alone as they navigate all the complexities life throws at them.
