Life isn’t always a fairytale; if anything, it’s often anything but. Yet, it’s the very myriad of euphoric highs and seemingly life-shattering lows that define the human experience as we know it. While our stories may not always revolve around rushing off to extravagant balls or forest creatures helping us decide on the night’s fit, there's no one saying we cannot step in as our own fairy godmothers, or at least that’s the case made by Remi Wolf’s infectious new single, “Cinderella.”
“Cinderella” is the first glimpse of Wolf’s highly-anticipated sophomore album, Big Ideas, set to release July 12 via Island Records. Taking a nod from the infectious groove of ‘70s funk, bright horn sections and whistles accent Wolf's distinctive, soulful bravado. It's a perfect summer cocktail of nostalgia and modern genre fluidity that urges you to get up and take life by the horns. “Cinderella” is a track drenched in the heat of the mid-day sun, a warmth that only begins to burn when you take notice of life’s uncertainties.
“‘Cinderella’ is a lyrical collage of the ups and downs and mood swings and transient lifestyle I was experiencing while writing this album. Constant travel and rapid changes led me to feel such a rollercoaster of emotion- moving from feeling really insecure to feeling really good to feeling manic and depressed and then feeling OK again, while desperately craving a grounding figure to tell me I was doing a good job. So, this song was me stepping in as my own fairy godmother telling myself that I was in control. Sonically, I wanted the song to have a sense of 70s nostalgia while still feeling like a record made today. And I wanted to make something where you can’t help but dance and move and feel good while listening. I recorded this at Electric Lady in New York at the beginning of 2023. I initially made the song with just myself and Solomonophonic - and then I was able to bring in some amazing horns players to round out the sauce.”
Wolf is no stranger to carving out her own path. It’s a sentiment made clear as day with her latest earworm of a single and its accompanying music video, directed by Ragan Henderson and Wolf herself. Stepping out in classic jazzercise fit, Wolf fully takes in the splendor of Los Angeles State Historic Park, including getting a sweet treat from her favorite ice cream vendor, Mac DeMarco.
