Romy Mars Is Tired of Stroking Your Fragile "Ego"

Romy Mars explores a complex relationship in her hypnotic new single "Ego." The song's upbeat sound may initially give the impression of a carefree, summery bop. However, beneath this seemingly easygoing veneer, the song's lyrics reveal a more profound, more pointed resentment.

The track opens on a sunny note, with Mars eager to quickly repair her relationship, even if she's still hanging on to some hostility about her partner. Despite the couple being in a fight now, the singer-songwriter envisions their future as an "all-American mom and dad" with a white-picket-fence finish line. Mars weaponizes an acute sexuality to smooth over those annoying relationship issues they have, crooning cheeky lines like, "Don't get in your head, get under the covers."

Despite her struggle to find love for this man, whom she believes has buried goodness, she decides to stroke his ego to cover up the problem. In the chorus, she sings, "Could you close your eyes and pretend my body's your ego? / We could go all night long as it's not about me though / If you wanna see how thin on ice you are, feel my waist / Wanna know how pretty life was without you, look at my face." This use of irony in her lyrics is both intriguing and thought-provoking.

Although she may use her wiles to distract both her partner and even herself from the cracks in their relationship, she conjures visions of their picture-perfect future together, where they share "a loving wealth" and she's "on a Percocet, tanning in the front lawn." But even in this suburban fantasy, Mars realizes she still can't fully escape her unresolved discontent.

The new single, a follow-up to her previous hit, "A-Lister," continues Mars' candid discussions on the realities of nepotism and the irony of being connected. The pouty pop star's previous single sees the rising singer-songwriter fully embracing her nepo-baby image, turning it into an ironic, candy-coated eye-roll at the hollowness of fame. This connection to her previous success is sure to excite fans and critics alike, encouraging them to listen to her latest offering.
