Sam Short's “Taste It” Is a Tantalizing Pop Slowburn

With a precise voice and range that can both cut, etch, and corral a listener into emotive stasis, newcomer Sam Short has already proven she can tease an audience into a rabid state of anticipation. It is also the reason labels are fawning over this Los Angeles via Oregon talent as she has already proven her songwriting chops for others, before evidently incubating even more impressive material for herself, of which her latest single "Taste It" is exhibit A.

"Taste It" is a sadly familiar tale, that of deceit, the bitter aftermath of infidelity that spurs some good percentage of pop music, just usually less impressively than on this ferocious record. As Short herself describes it, "This is the most honest song I’ve ever written. It epitomizes my very first heartbreak. It details the visceral reaction that comes with betrayal…a feeling so painful you hate it, yet so real you can taste it."

The palpability of her pain, the angst imparted both lyrically and vocally reminds us that even in our hardest moments, something beautiful can be gained, and more poignantly shared as a slave with those experiencing similar angst. Sam's career is still as her surname suggests, short, but it is also equally short on the flaws that accompany a new talent. If you haven't indulged, give Short’s immense promise a taste. You won’t regret it.
