Adventurous production duo Snow Strippers, consisting of Tatiana Schwaninger and Graham Perez, have created the perfect record for the chronically online with the release of Night Killaz Vol. 1. Blending the stark electronics of witch house to rave atmospherics, the EP combusts with color. Each track threatens to explode with energy, buzzing with solid production and ghostly vocals coming together in an addictive and creatively lawless combination.
The opening track, "Aching Like It's," begins with a remixed sample of Adventure Club's "Lonely" before catapulting the listener into a world reminiscent of their last big release, April Mixtape 3, featuring the duo's trademark high-octane production and hypnotic yet tumultuous lyricism. The energy doesn't relent in the following "Cautious," with its siren-fueled collage of beats and synths packing a punch, while ethereal vocals detail the narrator's overwhelming feelings of shame and melancholy. It's the kind of juxtaposition that can inspire one to burst into tears while simultaneously dancing the night away in a smokey underground rave.
The record's only single, "Just Your Doll," is an eclectic mash of boisterous sound that aims to honor the true roots of electronic sleaze. Enigmatic and explosive, the track pulsates with unapologetic anarchic abandon driven by mechanical piano lines and beats that are both aggressive and full-throttle, as frustrated lyrics and vocals create an experience that is undeniably trashy yet hauntingly evocative. The rest of the record, including the standout track "Touching Yours," is a rollercoaster of emotion. Each song feels like one that's playing at a party in a movie where the main character goes into the bathroom and stares into the mirror, looking into the depths of their soul while the music is muffled in the background until someone knocks and breaks them out of their trance.
The EP takes a turn on its finale, "Another High." Taking a break from the more in-your-face synth blasts, the track is a transcendent effort that stands out from the rest of the EP, with heavenly layers of piano, buzzing synths and effects, and grooving vocals taking the lead. There's a sonic element in the piece that feels almost like the listener is coming out of the haze of the night, already searching and racing for the next high to keep the unending party in motion.
Overall, Snow Strippers' strong display of technicolor electronics and melding together of defiantly left-field pop aspects interlocked with grand, larger-than-life production elements is nothing short of perfection. Pulling influence and referencing a wide variety of artists from HEALTH to SOPHIE in its scope, Night Killaz Vol. 1 is serious heat for the winter months.
