Sofía Valdés and Cuco Close Out the Summer With “How’s That Working Out?”


A collab of indie Latino royalty, Panamanian songstress Sofía Valdés teams up with Mexican-American musician Cuco on the bubbly pop single “How’s That Working Out?”

There’s no fantasy quite as enticing as confronting the lover who discarded you about whether or not the grass is really greener. Gorgeously fed up and playful, Valdés prances in her longing for acknowledgment, cathartically belting, “I’m still right here where you left me / You went out there but you forget me.” Cuco’s closing verse is fit for a wounded lover boy, no longer playing the role of the “fall back.” Both acts vocally complement each other seamlessly, a soft summer anthem we almost wish we got a little sooner. 

“Fall into a life you were sold, is it really worth it if it’s cold?” Valdés' mastery in songwriting shines, with this track serving the humble reminder that an idea of something is almost always sexier than the reality of what’s in front of you, though only one can keep you warm at night. 

Valdés has only become more and more herself in recent work, stripping layers of metal to reveal the ancestral roots that bind her heart to the earth in last year's Silvia. “How’s That Working Out?” is a return home to being a silly little it girl, her elegant vocals mesmerizing as she queues up her debut album, due later this year. 

Finishing with an acoustic outro, the melting of two rich multi-cultural musical heritages shines even on a track with no spoken Spanish. We don’t know how it took this long for Cuco and Sofía Valdés to collaborate, but we’re just grateful they finally did.
