spiderblush Glides Through the Pain of Betrayal in "Big Deal"

Indie-pop darling on the rise, spiderblush, is starting the year of strong with “Big Deal,” the first taste of her upcoming debut EP. In this gut-wrenching track, the young singer-songwriter grapples with mixed signals and ponders the validity of her own feelings. Over a smooth guitar and a soft drum, spiderblush’s angelic harmonies tell a classic story of being explicitly pursued in a relationship and then suddenly made to feel like you’re the one making things too much of a “Big Deal.”

The track begins with an apathetic “It’s okay I guess,” cushioning her true feelings so as not to come off as over-dramatic. It sets the tone for the whole track, where spiderblush is in a constant push and pull between her own gut and the confusion brought on by sudden heartbreak. The instrumentation mimics these waves of emotion, swaying from soft to more upbeat.

The catchy chorus serves as an internal dialogue, going over the times they showed interest to prove legitimacy in her confusion but still making it known that she’s trying not to overreact. It’s a relatable moment of dulling down your reaction to not seem “crazy” or “over-dramatic” in a relationship that hasn’t even started yet.

"‘Big Deal’ is a ballad about betrayal." spiderblush confesses, “It’s being told that you are wanted and loved, and just when you start to love that person back, they leave you. This is the song to sing along to when your heart feels broken before it was even full.”

As spiderblush gears up for the release of her first full project, “Big Deal” adds to a discography full of the nuances of growing up, experiencing the first blows of heartbreak, and learning about yourself through it all. Through displaying her singular perspective through sharp lyricism and the unique sonic choices throughout her songs, spiderblush is definitely an artist who should be on your radar.
