Stella Lefty Makes a Bold Debut With 'Tragic, Really' EP
Maybe it’s just me, but it feels like the standard for pop music has risen dramatically over the past year and a half. Among the near-endless onslaught of cultural powerhouses like Sabrina Carpenter and Gracie Abrams constantly pushing the envelope, it is still worth noting the sheer amount of innovation coming from the culture’s more burgeoning young acts who use their unique experiences, personalities, and perspectives to satiate their ravenous fans. Enter Stella Lefty, an LA-based singer and songwriter who returns to us with her debut EP Tragic, Really, following a year of perfectly polished singles.
Versatile, charismatic, and wise beyond her years, Lefty’s Tragic, Really is emotional catharsis manifested in just six songs. Encapsulating the feeling of life’s euphoric highs, devastating lows, and everything in between, the rising star's honesty is just as palpable as it is understated. The EP opener “Cynic” sees Lefty wrought with romantic tension and existential malaise, expressing a desire to be understood that, sadly, does not seem to find a resolution by the time the EP closer, “See Through,” comes around. On tracks like “Grace” and the project’s eponymous “Tragic, Really,” Lefty juxtaposes brutal honesty with flashes of candid self-doubt and clever writing that few of her contemporaries could match even if they tried.
Underneath Lefty’s narrative of intimate and heartwrenching tragedy on Tragic, Really exists a young artist bursting at the seams with what one could only describe as emotional magnetism. Her depictions of romantic frustrations, paired with experimental tracks that leverage modern pop sensibilities with elements of indie rock, new age soul, and folk, are sure to leave fans coming back after just one spin. Everything about this EP doesn’t just make Stella Lefty feel like she’s one of pop music’s most promising rising acts; it makes her takeover feel all but inevitable. You’re running out of time to be an early fan, after all, so check out Tragic, Really before it’s too late.
