Susannah Joffe Basks in Romantic Bliss in “Sofia Coppola”

“Sofia Coppola,” the latest single from Susannah Joffe, strikes an effortless balance between the glimmer of whimsical femininity and a deep desire for idyllic pleasure. Reminiscent of the vintage stylings of Amy Winehouse and the heavenly sonic atmosphere of Lana Del Rey, Joffe provides a raw and unashamed proclamation of love and adoration.

Born from the idea of admiration—“Sofia Coppola” tackles the feelings of obsession surrounding a new crush. Susannah’s discography repeatedly references religious worship and iconography; in a way, Sofia Coppola aligns with this concept. Coppola, Joffe claims, has garnered a cult following, becoming a cultural icon even beyond her work as a filmmaker. This idea of idolizing captures the essence of a starry-eyed, sapphic romance. “I'll braid your hair then fuck you on your dad's old sofa / Idolize you, my Sofia Coppola.”

Usually, Susannah says she feels inclined to write more seriously, leaning into the indie shoegaze genre with complex lyrics and deeper meanings. “Sofia Coppola,” however, is “just a vibe.” Allowing herself to think more sonically, Joffe freestyled over the synth-filled track, sticking with what she calls very basic, tongue-in-cheek lyrics to craft the feeling of bliss strung throughout the song.

In the future, we have a lot to look forward to. Susannah is looking to return to her Texan roots. Her upcoming single, “shit out of luck,” stays true to the same dreamy sound of “Sofia Coppola” but adds Western flair with the twang of a slide guitar. Beyond her music, Joffe also works as her own creative director, allowing her to build her visual world from the bottom up. This world-building, something she considers integral to her upcoming project, will be on full display in the “Sofia Coppola” music video, set for release soon.
