Vicious is the word that comes to mind when describing Brooklyn’s “trans-slut rock” duo Um, Jennifer? who are back with their second EP, Dirty Twice, which is out now on Final Girl Records. Don’t mistake their name for a punchline though, because their music definitely is not. It’s their most feral yet. 

Fig Regan and Eli Scarpati, the brains behind Um, Jennifer? built a cult New York following on the strength and viscosity of tracks like”Girl Class” and “Fishy” managing to turn gender, desire, and chaos into something you could scream along to at a house show. Their 2025 debut album, Um Comma Jennifer Question Mark, gave that world shape by bringing to life the mythology built around “Jennifer,” and the mysterious namesake of the band’s identity.  

This EP was written over two years in bursts of passion, fury, heartache, and the kind of 20-minute mental health walks that turn into a whole introspective emotional discovery that makes the original mental health walk you set out to go on last a whole hour (or several) instead. At its heart, this EP wields desire as a weapon and violence gets rewritten as seduction. What sets this project apart as well is the way it doesn’t soothe over into something tidy, but lean into the messiness of these emotions. 

Regan and Scarpati wrote, played, and recorded the whole thing themselves, from vocals and guitar, to drums and bass with production from Teddy O’Mara keeping the sound as raw and open as it could possibly get. This EP feels DIY, and does such an impeccable job of remaining that way. It really feels like you walked into that dive bar you love in the Upper East Side of NYC and the band that was absolutely ripping through their set just caught your attention so well you wouldn’t imagine looking away. 

The lead single off the EP “Bushwick Ratbag” had picked up early praise from Stereogum, Rolling Stone, and Out Culture and it’s really easy to hear why they’re one of our ones to watch: the distorted, rampant, destructive sound of Um, Jennifer? refuses to be ignored and feels like getting a scrape on your knees when it stings. 

Dirty Twice is the sound of an angry generation that’s sick of being ignored. It’s a raw, cutthroat, almost bloody in nature yet sincere project that’s a sterling example of the “trans slut rock” scene that the band has basically willed into existence and it’s only getting louder.
