Don't Be Fooled by Polly Money's Earworm Pop Innocence in "i'm not proud"

If you’re a fan of the 1975, chances are you’ve already heard Polly Money’s talent. Self described as a “lesbian overlord”, Money has gifted her stadium-worthy guitar and live vocals for the 1975 since 2022. Her new single “i’m not proud” is the result of a newfound confidence in her craft.

“i’m not proud” begins with a simple acoustic guitar, and shortly after Money’s voice – reminiscent of indie darling Phoebe Bridgers – joins the mix. Bubbly piano and synths complete her bright, peppy sound, contrasting the ashamed twinge of the lyrics. Money sings about having an attraction to someone else while being in a relationship. Lyrics such as “got my girl waiting at home”, “I’m thinking about you / when she goes down”, and “I’m not proud / I just need you now” expose Money’s sinfully sultry desires.

Speaking on the song, Money recounts: "'I’m not proud’ is all about playing around with the idea that music and lyrics can convey two different emotions and I love that. It's bouncy and happy sonically, but also about having a naughty lil crush. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and we had a lot of fun recording it. It just sounds playful and out of all of my music it has some of my favorite moments in it."

The release of the new single came alongside an announcement for her upcoming EP, “T-shirt Nothing Else,” out March 21st. Money will also open for Dora Jar at Omeara London on November 21st.
