Dora Jar Surrenders Herself to Love in "Lucky"

Dora Jar is making headlines. She was announced as the opener for Gracie Abrams’ Europe/UK 'The Secret of Us Tour,' and some fans were not happy, petitioning for her to be replaced. Thankfully, Jar took it in stride, and Abrams quickly came to Jar’s defense. Now, it’s time for Dora Jar to make headlines with her music, starting with her latest release “Lucky.”

“Lucky” is quintessential Dora Jar. Acoustic guitar backs her airy and mellow vocals, giving the whole song a whimsical feel. Layered harmonies in the verses add depth, without overcomplicating the song. Jar teased the song on TikTok describing it as “very much a love song. total surrender.”

While the song is a love song it’s not an in-your-face, sunshine, and rainbows love song. It's a hazy, late-night, reflective love song. Rather than gushing over her partner right off the bat, the song opens with Jar exposing a darker side of her relationship, singing, “I had a very scary dream you were gone / Woke in a panic on the couch with the TV on / You're in the bedroom, 2 o'clock in the night / I hate that we fell asleep after a fight.” Jar finds her lover in the bedroom and crawls into bed with them, and suddenly any lingering anger from their fight fades away. In the chorus, Jar reflects on the love she feels for her partner singing, “I'm not mad anymore / My love is warming up now / Thinking about you / I feel lucky / Thinking about you / I feel lucky.

“Lucky is out now, this song was so healing to write and it took 5 years,” Jar wrote on Instagram following the song’s release. If we have to wait another five years for new music from Dora Jar, it’ll be well worth the wait. Though we, of course, hope new music comes much sooner than that.
