Jazzie Young's 'Everything Changes' Is An Invitingly Introspective Debut

Each time indie songstress Jazzie Young released a single this year, fans were clamoring for more. Today, Young quenched her fans’ thirst with her 10 song debut album Everything Changes. Full of the introspective and vulnerable lyrics she’s known for, Everything Changes is a treat for fans new and old. Young took the time to answer our burning questions about her debut album, change, and indie movie references.

Ones to Watch: Debut album! How are you feeling?

Jazzie Young: I’m so excited for it to finally be out! Working on this album changed my life in so many ways, and really opened up my eyes to the possibilities that collaboration holds. It’s just been such a beautiful journey and I’m excited for the release to breathe new life into the album. Some of these songs I’ve been sitting with them since the fall of 2023, so I’m really ready for them to be out in the world and to be able to take on whatever life they're meant to!

Change is a big theme in this album and you said that the prospect of change is something that you're constantly looking for, yet it's your greatest fear. What is it about change that creates this dichotomy within you and how do you balance your fear of change with your desire for it?

I think it really depends on where I’m at in my life how I relate to the idea of change. When everything feels really secure and I feel content in how my life is unfolding, the idea of something disrupting that can feel scary. And even within that I am always looking for growth and change within myself and my surroundings. I think the only way for me to really balance those two seemingly opposing feelings is to acknowledge them, that it's complex and that that is okay.

How do you want fans to feel after listening to this album? Is there a key takeaway you're trying to drive home?        I think the key take away is that we are all complicated, intrinsically layered people and it's okay to feel things deeply and change your mind and be messy. This album really explores a lot of different emotions and genres, and I think it kinda pushes back against this idea of “nicheness”.

All the music videos for Everything Changes have indie movie references, including Girl, Interrupted and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Are there any other movies that you are particularly inspired by that we might see references to in the future?

I love this question! Yes absolutely. 10 Things I Hate About You is one of my favorite films of all time and I would love to be able to reference that in a future visual.

What's it like stepping into a directorial role for your music videos?

I think it's always been a bit intuitive for me. The hardest part was learning the logistics of the role, in music videos it can sometimes be a bit of a loose term and different jobs can overlap. But I’ve always had a very clear vision for each of my visuals so making sure that that is reached in a way that feels authentic to my music is something that's very important to me!

Do you ever have a vision for a music video while a song is still coming together or does that process come once a song is finished?

I usually don't have a fully fleshed out video concept while the song is coming together, but as the song takes shape, especially in the production phase, I usually start to get ideas, certain visuals, concepts that feel inspiring that I dive deeper into as I get clearer on what direction the song is taking for me. Some songs sonically and visually are just clearer than others. They know who they are and the vision comes together seamlessly. Others take a bit more exploration and time.

"Mr. Casual" is a stand out song having previously been released as a single with a huge positive reaction. It's also a stand out song sonically. What inspired the sound we hear on "Mr. Casual?"

Me and my producer started writing again this winter and we decided we wanted to start each song with a sonic “vibe”. So we just played around with sounds and weird little hooks until we happened upon the loop for Mr Casual. It was really us just messing around until we found something that I felt inspired by to help lead us down the rabbit hole. That song was so fun to write because it's like nothing else I've made before. It’s bratty and there's a lot of talking. It was fun to step into a different role writing wise and performance wise!

What's the worst slutty thigh tattoo a guy can have?

Oh my god there are so many. But maybe like those old school naked women tattoos that are just super objectifying. Lets get a little more creative guys!

Who are your OnesToWatch?

I’ve been listening to Momma so much these days. I discovered them randomly online and the more songs I hear the more I love them. Such fun melodies and lyrics. I feel like I’m in a 2000’s rom com when I listen to them. It's so great. I’m also so so so excited for Blood Orange’s new album.
