Let flipturn Guide You Through the Burnout Days [Q&A]

Floridian indie rockers, flipturn, have been touring the states with their latest encyclopedia of sunny musical innovation, their album Burnout Days. Armed with a matured sound and cathartic rebellion of toxic positivity – with a simultaneous acceptance of ever-ending change – the album is shimmering and grounded. Always wanting to hear from the artists themselves, we chatted with flipturn about the release, alongside a shoutout to the mundane and an itinerary for the best day in Jacksonville:

OnesToWatch: Congrats on the amazing album, how are you feeling about the release? How does this release feel in comparison to those prior?

Tristan Duncan: Honestly, super stoked it’s finally out. By the time it comes out, all the songs feel so old! I think anybody who makes music would agree with that sentiment, though! I know that the band is really happy with how this album shaped up and genuinely excited to start making new music soon.

What are some of the sonic influences for Burnout Days

Devon VonBalson: I’d say collectively Phoenix, Radiohead, & Big Thief have been big sonic inspirations for us especially making this album. We all individually have our own inspirations too. For me personally, I was channeling a lot of Lewis Del Mar, Mutemath, Broken Social Scene, and Morning Teleportation.

What made you land on the title Burnout Days for the album? What were you burnt out of… and if you’ve gotten to the other side of the burnout, share your advice.

Dillon Basse: The album was written during a time in which we had been touring so often that it felt like we were experiencing some side effects of burnout. Most of the songs on the album tackle questions and feelings related to those side effects so we thought the name covered the album as a whole! I wouldn't say we were completely burnt out or else we wouldn’t still be touring and probably would have never written this record. I will say however that over the years we’ve learned how to combat those feelings by knowing when to take a break and when to focus on things not related to our careers.

You recorded this album at the iconic Sonic Ranch Studios, how did that impact the sound / recording experience of this record?

Madeline Jarman: I feel like we were able to find stillness while at Sonic Ranch. There’s a couple delicate moments on the record, like in “Tides” or “Window,” and I think the essence of Sonic Ranch helped with that. Since the studio is on a huge pecan farm, there’s not much else around other than the pecan trees and sand. The simplicity was beautiful!

Which song are you most excited to release into the world?

Dillon Basse: “Swim Between Trees” is a song I've been very excited to share with the world because I feel it is a track that really pushes the boundaries of what flipturn’s sound is while also still sounding like us. It really felt like new territory and I am excited to play it live on this upcoming tour.

What’s a perfect day in Jacksonville, FL?

Devon VonBalson: Perfect day in Jacksonville, FL - In the morning, head to The Fox Restaurant in Avondale for some breakfast diner food, hit Bold Bean coffee for your caffeine fix, pop into Tiger Records next door, then explore the antique shops in 5 Points, head over to the river walk & enjoy a stroll along the St. John’s. For lunch, hit On The Fly food truck downtown, pop into Chamblin’s bookstore, or if you’re near the beaches, hit Angie’s Subs for the best sandwich in town. For dinner, Hawkers has you covered at the beach AND in Riverside. Then, a show at The Walrus in Murray Hill or a drink at Volstead to call the night.

Where do you find joy outside of music?

Mitch Fountain: We travel so much year round, so I find joy just being able to create routines in living while I am home. Sounds very mundane, but just being able to have a good sleep schedule and plan for what I’m doing that week. On tour everything is literally happening at that moment and then it disappears, and then you're in the next city. That is also incredibly cool, and both lifestyles balance each other out.

Who are your OnesToWatch… some artists flipturn is listening to that WE should also be listening to?

Mitch Fountain: Marlon Funaki and Mild Minds have been two artists that I have been binge listening to. Both are synth-y bands. Marlon Funaki is more psychedelic while Mild Minds is more dance/electronic. Both are really awesome.
