Experimental rising pop star Maude Latour has released another perfect track from Sugar Water, her highly-anticipated debut album slated for an August 16 release. The new single, “Comedown,” is an emotional state of reflection told through Latour’s signature vivid lyrics and hypnotizing pop production. Her music is always personal, but this track contains an extra layer of vulnerability due to its honest recalling of time spent with someone she recently lost.
The rising star opened up in an Instagram post about the upcoming release of “Comedown,” sharing with fans that while working on the album an old friend tragically passed. She said that, “Suddenly all of these memories of age 15-24 just came flooding back to me. the crazy things we used to do—sneaking into clubs at age 15, hours at the great lawn, biking endlessly, the parties, ending up with strangers. This song is for all of these memories of my New York teenage dream. And for my friend. I wish he was here.”
In “Comedown”, Latour delicately recalls being a teenager falling in love with someone who she describes with gentle care and honesty. The descriptions are hyper-specific, making the track extremely personal while possessing that magical quality where music is somehow more universal because of its specificity. The one thing all humans can relate to is vulnerability, and “Comedown” portrays Maude’s memories as if they’re our own.
What makes Latour’s pen so special is her ability to romanticize while maintaining a realistic, human approach. Her music exists in the indescribable moments that you can’t get back, but you remember exactly how they felt. The mesmerizing melody in “Comedown” sounds like a maze of memories and reaches cinematic heights in the chorus, engaging listeners from start to finish.
After the last chorus, Latour finishes her beautiful tribute with a lush outro that expresses every complex emotion in one simple statement: “Comedown, I don’t care if we comedown.” It captures the blissful side of coming of age when consequences don’t matter and the world feels as if it's in the palm of your hand. It’s cathartic and beautiful, the perfect way to end this special track.
“Comedown” joins two previously released tracks, “Too Slow” and “Cursed Romantics,” to give listeners an idea of what to expect from Latour’s debut album. But if we’ve learned anything from listening to this exploratory artist, it’s that she likes to break the rules. Based on what's paved the road for Sugar Water, it’s easy to say Maude Latour is marching towards releasing one of the best pop albums of the year.
