Ones To Watch: Hey guys! Please introduce yourselves.

MAYJUN: We are Mayjun. My name is Elijah, name is Jeremiah, my name is Vali. We met in high school and started performing at Polyfest in a summer group.

Yeah, it’s been really cool. I come from a solo artist background, so it’s definitely a new thing to work with other people. It’s a new experience contributing to something we all make together. We have our disagreements sometimes, but at the end of the day, it’s about the music. Once we realize that, the ideas kind of just fall into place.

Describe your music and what influenced you to make it.

I think the genesis of our band comes from our influences growing up. We’re into a lot of different genres. We’re pretty eclectic when it comes to music tastes. That’s what adds to us as a band and how we create music. We wanted to make music that people who look like us—mainly Jerry—don’t usually listen to. We hope to tap into that market and hopefully throw some new things out there.

Do you have any career highlights so far?

Yeah, definitely. We’re still quite new to the scene, but one highlight was our first proper radio interview this morning, which was pretty cool. We had it with Tahir Film. But I’m sure tonight will be another big highlight for us.

Are you guys different on stage compared to when you’re recording?

Yeah, I think it’s pretty easy transitioning from the studio to a live setting, just from our past experience performing live with other artists. It worked out pretty well.

Do you have any advice for emerging artists?

Go for it. If you love it, do it. And if you want to do it, make sure you love it.

So, if someone wants to listen to one of your songs for the first time, which one should they check out?

Jealous is the one.

Tell us about Jealous—how did that come together?

Jealous was actually the result of our very first session. Every idea that came to mind, we just threw it in. It was such a weird process. I started trying to… (laughs) which was interesting. But it ended up on the track, so that was pretty cool. It’s a song created quite freely, and it really represents our different influences. It’s a nice track that came together smoothly.

We grew up with so many different types of artists. When we went into the studio, we didn’t necessarily have to tap into one specific influence. We just went with a vibe, and what came out, came out. We were lucky it didn’t sound too out there.
