Ones To Watch: Can you introduce yourself and tell us about your journey into music?
Yung Milla: I’m Yung Milla, born and raised in Darwin. Music’s always been a part of my family, and I knew from a young age that I wanted to pursue it as a career. Here I am today, making music and living the dream.
When did you realise you wanted to pursue music?
Music has the power to change lives—it can shift your mood and make you feel different things. I saw that in my own music and wanted to make it something real and impactful.
How would you describe your music?
My music is fun, with good vibes. It's a bit bumpy, sounds good, and feels great for the soul.
Has your music evolved since you started?
100%. Like most artists, you grow with your music. As you experience new things and meet new people, your sound evolves. My music is constantly growing with me.
Who would you say has influenced your music career?
My big brother, Jay Miller. He’s shown me the ropes and paved the way for me in this industry. He’s been a huge influence on my music and career.
Can you talk about your songwriting process?
Writing is an emotional journey for me. My music reflects my experiences, so it’s personal. It’s a way to express what’s going on in my life, and it’s always an emotional ride.
Who do you write music for?
I write for my people—my community. It’s all about them, and I hope my music resonates with anyone going through the same struggles I have.
What do you hope people take away from your music?
I want people who’ve been in my shoes to feel like if I can make it, they can too. I hope to inspire others to chase their dreams, no matter where they come from.
Have you faced any challenges in making music?
Absolutely. There’ve been a lot of challenges, but it’s all about how you overcome them. I won’t go into specifics, but music has definitely helped me through tough times.
How do you overcome challenges?
Music is my therapy. It helps me cope with life’s ups and downs. Whenever I face challenges, I turn to my music.
What have been the highlights of your career so far?
One of the biggest highlights has been being managed by Chris Carr. She’s had a huge impact on my career and has really helped me grow as an artist.
How would you describe your performing style? Are you more spontaneous or do you like to plan?
You’ll have to wait and see! There’s definitely a lot of preparation behind the scenes, but when I’m on stage, I let the energy flow. People only see what’s on stage, but a lot of work goes into it beforehand.
What are your goals for the future?
My main goal is to make a positive change in my community. I’m tired of seeing negativity, and I believe music can help shift things in the right direction.
Do you have any advice for emerging artists?
My advice would be to ignore the negative comments. That comes with anything in life, not just music. If you stay true to yourself and follow your path, you’ll be on a smooth road.
