Nikki Kent's "Scars" Is the Alt Rock Catharsis For Every Ex Who's Done You Wrong

There are many subtle tragedies a woman can journey through that will dismantle her being and reconstruct someone completely reborn. Someone stronger, more headstrong, incapable of being weakened by heartbreak because they’ve already overcome the worst of it. Getting cheated on by someone you thought you’d spend the rest of your life with after a seven-year relationship is most certainly one of those tragedies, yet Nikki Kent proves with “Scars” that her battle wounds are merely the proof that there’s nothing she can’t survive.

A dark pop grieving, “you put our love right in front of a gun” captures the pleading to understand why someone who was once her safety would be the same person to betray her. “Scars” follows a similar sonic landscape as Kent’s debut single “My Kisses In Threes xxx,” occupying a shogegaze, indie rock lane that desperately needed her a dose of her dark feminine.

But though this pain was from a former lifetime, and Kent has reemerged from the ashes as someone impenetrable, the scarring never quite stops telling a story. Speaking to the cold yet bare reality of the song, she shares, “My single ‘Scars’ came from a very difficult time, when the person I loved most betrayed me. The knife in my back left scars I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life. Deep wounds leave lingering scars no matter how much healing we do. That’s just how love works.”

As a blooming voice in the industry, Kent’s bravery in giving herself over entirely to her music will prove to be vital as she builds the foundation of her inevitable rockstardom.
