Rewind: Our 5 Favorite Music Videos of Last Week
While it's far too easy to lose ourselves in the deluge of new music releases that grace us every week, one thing that cannot and should not be overlooked is the art of the music video. With the heyday era of MTV long behind us, Rewind sees us taking a look back at a handful of our favorite music videos of the past week.
Neoma - "Say You Love Me"
If you have a craving for prom noir aesthetics matched perfectly to the eerie ominous beauty of Neoma's lush voice, than this Juli Williams-directed effort is worth a voyeuristic peek. Kicking off with a propulsive piano scene and moody baseline, "Say you Love Me" proves that good location and styling give plenty of pretense and tension to extend the best of cinema to the shortform music format.
Tony Njoku - "Rhododendrons"
A mesmerizing effort of live tableau theatrical imagery brought to life by artist Tony Njoku himself and assistant director Gregor Davies-Ratcliffe, the video for "Rhododendrons" is breathtaking and woven deftly to the tempo of the song's composition. Heavily inspired by Sergei Parajanov's The Color of Pomegranates, this gorgeously varnished work is a collection of impressively color contrasted characters that rhythmically act out a narrative that is absurdly textured - a real source of inspiration for any dull afternoon.
Josh Levi - "Vices"
Taking the format of a punk skate video and flipping it on its R&B axis, Josh Levi employs his patented cute, sexy appeals but in a setting thats leaves the lazy tropes of clubs and vices way behind. Ready yourself for a garage and empty pool serenade replete with skater dropping in, a beautiful song and a fun visual deliver to (un)match.
beabadoobee - "See You Soon"
Before this moment, I was unsure sure a conceptual choice could match such an airy and light song so simply and elegantly; directors Alexandra Lesse and Luke Casey took a song that felt like a beautiful reassuring breeze and had beabadoobee embark on a black and white countryside journey with such stripped-down zeal that it felt like the momentum was emulsifying off the screen. As the song's main character and muse, beabaddoobee makes the angelic flying feeling contagious and the reserved lucid production lends itself to a perfectly realized dream.
Mel Blue - "everything about you"
"To everyone watching this video I love you" serves as a perfect summary of Mel Blue's "everything about you." So hop on and let the journey of pure fun and camaraderie begin. Paced by a bike peddling beat and disco-lite chords, this wonderfully fun video full of fisheyed band poses, laugh-evoking posse antics, and silly friendship magically captured by director Maya Luana is an instant dose of eye caffeine.
