What do you get when a dextrous, hardcore band incorporates… waltz? Today, California-based “sasscore” band SeeYouSpaceCowboy premieres their new single “Chewing The Scenery” which incorporates elements from an unconventional genre into the MySpace-era grind sound the band is known for.
The first new track since SeeYouSpaceCowboy’s second-full length album, The Romance of Affliction (2021), “Chewing The Scenery” is inspired by frontwoman Connie Sgarbossas’s desire to incorporate a waltz part into a song. “This track served as a proof of concept for the beginning of playing around with whatever we wanted to and showed us that we can push without the confines of genre and style and still create something that sounded cohesive,” said Sgarbossa.
The four-minute rager opens with harmonic vocals and introspective lyrics that grapple with the question of whether love is possible without the pain and frustration that often accompany it. Listeners are then catapulted into headbanging, mosh-inducing guitar riffs and rhythm sections as the singer asks “Who’ll stop the bleeding / As you’re stabbing my heart with the dullest of knives? / Does this bring you joy?”
“Lyrically this song reflects the melodrama and conflict of relationships but recontextualized as a theatrical play you are putting on for the world,” explains Sgarbossas. “It deals with the debate about whether love can be just bliss and happiness, or if you have to acknowledge and accept the pain and frustration that can and most likely will accompany it, as well as dealing with that realization.”
“Chewing The Scenery” was produced by Matt Squire whose production, songwriting, and mixing credits include Sum 41, Neck Deep, The Used, Underoath, and The Amity Affliction.
On the heels of their North American tour with Silverstein and Dayseeker earlier this year, SeeYouSpaceCowboy will be touring with nothing, nowhere. this fall.
