Soft Kill Release Stellar Surprise EP 'Roseland'

Surprise! Postpunk juggernauts Soft Kill returns with Roseland, a three-track EP showcasing their prolific and ever-evolving artistry. Seamlessly blending light and dark to keep their sound feeling perpetually fresh, the band is never content to repeat themselves. The band's continuous push of their creative boundaries is evident in crafting songs that balance between bright, jangly melodies and shadowy, introspective undertones. On Roseland, this adaptability and ambition are taken further, creating a rich, atmospheric journey that oscillates from moments of melancholic beauty to deeper, more uneasy passages while maintaining their distinct postpunk edge.

The opening track, "Blood On My Shoes," immediately sets the tone, plunging the listener into a brooding, slow-burn intensity with echoing drums and jagged guitar riffs. The production builds with a deliberate, almost cinematic tension, giving the track an ominous edge as the song ventures forward into the dark. The band's ability to craft an expansive and intimate soundscape draws the listener into a unique world where tension and release are meticulously balanced.

The title track, "Roseland," is a catchy yet complex effort that follows a strong sense of emotional pacing. It's a work that quietly builds, then shifts gears with jangly energy, reminiscent of bands like The Ocean Blue and The Smiths on a road trip mixtape. It's a vibrant yet bittersweet anthem where melancholy dances with a glimmer of sanguinity, all driven by infectious guitars and Tobias Grave's dreamy, sighing vocals.

The EP closes with "Circles," a cover of DAG NASTY's track, reimagined through SOFT KILL's distinctive lens. This version fits perfectly into the EP's narrative, including not only a nod to influence but a fully realized reimagining. Soft Kill keeps the punk spirit alive while injecting the track with unexpected harmonies that lend it a surprising emotional profoundness. It's a cover that stays true to its roots but braves new territory, adding a new dimension to a familiar riff and completing the record with a sense of raw revitalization.

Roseland is a storm of troubled tracks and strange twists, a refreshing deviation from the usual, and a vibrant vision that crushes expectations. It just goes to show that Soft Kill never misses.
