“In another life, I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you,” the simple yet poignant message that bookends 2022’s Everything Everywhere All at Once struck an emotional chord with everyone and anyone capable of understanding the wellspring of joy found hidden in the seemingly mundane. beabadoobee infuses that same sentiment into her latest pure and simple single, “Coming Home.”

Channeling Bea’s love for The Beatles into a saccharine, stripped-back ballad, it’s difficult not to fall in love with the lighthearted nature of “Coming Home.” Written in conjunction with the artist’s ascent to worldwide fame, lyrics like “I’d do anything just to be with you / To sit and watch you slowly wake / And I’m sorry if I’m coming home too late,” illustrate the cost of fame. The simple heartbreak of being away from home, your loved ones, your cats, and what you would give to experience the simple joy of those moments tucked away from flashing lights and cheering crowds.

Sonically, much of the track is unassuming in nature, allowing for Bea’s wistful lyricism to take center stage. The one flourish occurs near the tail end of the song, where a muted trumpet joins Bea for a starlit waltz in a moment that feels like it could have been ripped straight from La La Land, painting the track in a nostalgic, twilight hue.

“I wrote it in a hotel room in LA when I was away from my boyfriend, my loved ones, my two cats,” shares beabadoobee. “It opens with all the little mundane things like doing the dishes, that I miss because I’m always away. Really, it’s just a cute little love song with a weird non-existent structure.”

“Coming Home” follows beabadoobee’s previous single “Take A Bite,” which also arrived alongside the news of the artist’s forthcoming album, This Is How Tomorrow Moves, set to release August 16 via Dirty Hit and produced by Rick Rubin at the famed Shangri-La Studios. We praised “Take A Bite” as a twinkling take on Bossa-pop, and the song has been the most-added track at Triple A radio in the U.S. for the second week in a row.
