âIn another life, I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you,â the simple yet poignant message that bookends 2022âs Everything Everywhere All at Once struck an emotional chord with everyone and anyone capable of understanding the wellspring of joy found hidden in the seemingly mundane. beabadoobee infuses that same sentiment into her latest pure and simple single, âComing Home.â
Channeling Beaâs love for The Beatles into a saccharine, stripped-back ballad, itâs difficult not to fall in love with the lighthearted nature of âComing Home.â Written in conjunction with the artistâs ascent to worldwide fame, lyrics like âIâd do anything just to be with you / To sit and watch you slowly wake / And Iâm sorry if Iâm coming home too late,â illustrate the cost of fame. The simple heartbreak of being away from home, your loved ones, your cats, and what you would give to experience the simple joy of those moments tucked away from flashing lights and cheering crowds.
Sonically, much of the track is unassuming in nature, allowing for Beaâs wistful lyricism to take center stage. The one flourish occurs near the tail end of the song, where a muted trumpet joins Bea for a starlit waltz in a moment that feels like it could have been ripped straight from La La Land, painting the track in a nostalgic, twilight hue.
âI wrote it in a hotel room in LA when I was away from my boyfriend, my loved ones, my two cats,â shares beabadoobee. âIt opens with all the little mundane things like doing the dishes, that I miss because Iâm always away. Really, itâs just a cute little love song with a weird non-existent structure.â
âComing Homeâ follows beabadoobeeâs previous single âTake A Bite,â which also arrived alongside the news of the artistâs forthcoming album, This Is How Tomorrow Moves, set to release August 16 via Dirty Hit and produced by Rick Rubin at the famed Shangri-La Studios. We praised âTake A Biteâ as a twinkling take on Bossa-pop, and the song has been the most-added track at Triple A radio in the U.S. for the second week in a row.
