Juliet Ivy Heals Her Inner Child in "4 foot 2," Announces Sophomore EP 'tiny but scary'

Breakout indie-pop singer-songwriter Juliet Ivy has announced that her highly anticipated EP tiny but scary will drop on August 9 via AWAL. In celebration of the announcement, Ivy has released her latest single, "4 foot 2," which offers a unique and intriguing perspective on a tough mental health spell. The song delves into the issue through the eyes of Ivy's inner child, providing a fresh take on the theme.

"4 foot 2" opens with gentle guitar strums, ushering in Ivy's warm and soft vocals. She describes her younger self as someone who does what they want and lives without a care in the world. As the chorus comes in, her vocals take on a more breathy, falsetto tone, singing about how she wishes she could still be like that instead of a person who barely gets out of bed and feels like they're drowning in a sea of overwhelming emotions. She wishes to protect her younger self from the realities of life and adulthood, ultimately realizing the importance of taking care of herself, because "When I'm hurting me, I'm hurting her."

The accompanying music video, directed by Sarah Bromley, is a heartfelt visual that follows the artist as she reminisces on memories of her younger self and wrestles with her mental health. A mini-Juliet follows her throughout the day, basking in the simple joys of spending time at home, going on fun adventures in the park, and embarking on sunny bike rides. Actual footage and photos of Juliet as a child are interspersed throughout the video, driving home the importance of nurturing your younger self because they are still a part of who you are.

With tiny but scary, Ivy delves into her own experiences as a young woman in the 21st century. "Girlhood is really present in this project—all the ever-changing, complicated, intertwined emotions of being a young girl," she explains. The EP, deeply rooted in Ivy's personal journey, invites listeners into her world with honest yet whimsical lyrics, which pair beautifully with her gently insistent melodies. "This EP is welcoming the people who found me from the first project [playpen] into my brain, my bedroom, and my childhood, and having them get to know me a little better,” she says. “playpen represented how I saw things outside of myself; this next project is more internal."
