Natalie Jane Reveals Her Stomachache Cure & Love for Drama [Q&A]

If your Christmas is more about exes and those jingles are more about the chains in your bedroom, then Natalie Jane is the very adult version of the holidays you need. We got her to answer what made her last single, “Sick to My Stomach” so nauseating and in the meantime, she’s got a very spicy hot cup of something for those in need of a holiday counter narrative:

OnesToWatch: Who is Natalie Jane?

Natalie Jane: Natalie Jane is someone who loves to scream and cry about what makes her sad and angry. She loves the drama, especially when it’s brought out in her music.

Besides being queasy, what is ‘Sick To My Stomach’ all about?

"Sick To My Stomach" is all things that make you feel anxious or stressed to the point where you feel it in your stomach. It can also be about being in love though, for example, when you have a new crush and you feel butterflies in your stomach. Everyone has felt one of these emotions at least once in their life and I feel it’s extremely relatable.

We feel you have a throwback vibe, but how would you describe your sound?

I would describe my sound as dramatic dark pop. I do feel though that I have music out with a variety of sonics. That's the beauty of music though you can literally do whatever you want and it doesn’t matter because you just keep on making new songs out of thin air and you never have to stop.

Any collaborations or features? Who produced the EP?

There are no collaborations or features on this project but a couple producers I worked with a lot on it are doc Daniel and Pink slip. I am obsessed with their work. I feel like they’re able to take exactly what I want to hear and bring it to life.

How do you cure a bad tummy? Any good home remedies for heartache as well?

Ok so I actually have a weird way to cure my stomach aches. I typically get them if I get cross-contamination with gluten or wheat because I’m celiac, so I actually will take an ice pack and ice my stomach to the point where it’s numb and I don’t feel it at all. It’s actually crazy because you will touch my stomach and it’ll feel like the actual ice pack because it’s so cold.

Do you feel weird when things go well?

I feel like life has so many twisted turns and especially in this industry so much will go wrong before going right most of the time so when things go well for me, I feel more relieved than necessarily excited. It’s also tough when you constantly compare yourself to other people at a similar age doing so much better than you. But then I also have to take a step back and remember that other people compare themselves to me. It’s extremely unhealthy but I think it’s something that everyone does.

Besides this excellent EP, anything else should we be on the lookout for?

I’m very excited for the Sick To My Stomach tour coming up at the beginning of 2025. It’s going to be so fun and I’m so excited for the stage design and the new set list and especially the merch. I put so much time and effort into making the merch and it’s exactly the way I envisioned it to be.

What's inspiring you right now outside of music?

My sister Jordan has really been inspiring me recently. She is currently in grad school studying to get a degree in chemistry. She shows me her notebook and not a single word on the page makes sense to me and I think it’s so cool how different our paths are and how unique they are to our own likings. She works so hard and is putting in so much time and effort and in five years she is going to have a PhD. I’m working so hard and I am putting in so much time and effort and in five years I will hopefully connect to more listeners and keep on growing with them.

Best activity suited to enjoying your new EP?

Speeding on the highway late at night is definitely suited for enjoying my new EP. (Not that I am encouraging this!) but it’s definitely heavily suited.

Musically, who is new but making all the right moves? Who are your current OnesToWatch?

I think Emei is a super dope artist with such a unique sound and image. I’ve been obsessed with her stuff for about a year now and I’m excited to watch her explode because I feel like it’s going to be so soon.
