10 Questions With Rising Korean Star SURAN

We love to see artists taking control of their career, even more so when it's a girlboss doing it to help further her own career and fostering others to do the same. Enviable K-pop and R&B artist SURAN is one such tour de force. Wanting to know more about this rising singer, pop star, and executive, we reached out to get the latest on her new Peder Elias-assisted single "Darling," personal and professional life, and more.

Ones To Watch: Who is SURAN?

SURAN: Someone who lives in music with a deep bright soul, and someone who loves to discover the joys of life.

What is "Darling" all about?

"Darling" suits well with gentle, bright daylight. It’ll also remind you of the fresh ocean breeze. It is a summer laid-back song with pure words of love sung in sweet vocals. ? Darling! Doesn’t that word make you feel cute and excited?

Proper duets are so rare these days, how’d that format come together for this song?

When I first heard the sketch version of the song with a male guide, I loved the song so I wanted to add my voice on top of the male voice. I thought it’d add extra sweetness and a lovely feeling if I make it a duet and build harmony in the chorus.

How’d it come together with Peder Elias? Also, who produced this track?

I contacted Peder first! This song was originally meant for a male vocalist, and it was made while my producer friends (Royal Dive, Zayson, Simon) were hanging out. I got to hear the track and fell in love so I claimed it, haha. Later, we changed the keys of the track and built more details on the track with a laid-back mood. I got to really like "Loving You Girl" by Peder last year, and that’s when I started contacting him and completing the track with him. :)

You include a lot of different influences in your music, how do you settle on your evolving sound?

In my life, I’ve been making courageous choices even though some people see them as rather stubborn, haha. I also think that music changes naturally with time and trends. I always try to be open-minded about music.

Can we expect more of this style in the future, potentially on an upcoming album?

These days, I’m standing at a crossroads and clearing my ideas about it. I don’t have anything certain yet.

Besides this excellent single, what else should we be on the lookout for?

Other than working on ‘Darling’, I’m recharging for the next album, possibly Flyin’ Part2.

What's inspiring you right now outside of music?

Shining sunlight, shining love.

As a girlboss who owns her own label, what does independence do for you and an artist?

Shin Suran was not a multiplayer, but she is becoming one since creating an independent label. I think when a human Shin Suran and an artist SURAN meet at one point and start working towards a better answer, that actually becomes more mature, strong ground for the newer, better version of the artist SURAN.

Who are your Ones To Watch?

Recently I’m really into the band The Marías. Love their music!
