A new era of Suki Waterhouse has (officially) arrived with the announcement of the dreamy pop star’s sophomore album Memoir of a Sparklemuffin. Along with the album title and tracklist reveal, Suki has released “Supersad,” a new track to get fans excited about what’s to come. It joins previous releases like “My Fun” and “To Love” as a taste of the full 18-track record’s sound. The '90s-inspired track embodies the healing power of self-care after a spiral, especially highlighting that no matter how dark things get you can always pick yourself back up again. In its stunning, psychedelic music video, Suki overcomes bed rot with a little help from her inner fairy godmother, and then proceeds to dance away the sadness.

Suki’s sophomore album Memoir of a Sparklemuffin comes out on September 13, coinciding with a headlining tour that begins at the end of the month in Denver. What’s a sparklemuffin you ask? It’s a colorful spider native to Australia that was discovered in 2015. To resemble her rebirth, Suki couldn’t quite relate to a butterfly spreading its wings but she could see herself in “this scraggly spider that hasn’t always got it together."

“I came across the Sparklemuffin — which is wildly colored, does this razzle-dazzle dance, and its mate will cannibalize it if she doesn’t approve of the dance,” Waterhouse explained in a statement. “It’s a metaphor for the dance of life we’re all in. The title felt hilarious, ridiculous, and wonderful to me.”

“Supersad” sounds straight out of a coming-of-age film while staying true to Suki’s individuality and quirky personality. She takes partial responsibility for her own despair in the first verse, admitting that “Spiraling is what I do.” There’s a raw honesty in the lyrics, dramatized by Suki’s vocal delivery in the verses compared to the chorus. As she describes the qualities of her mental rut in the verses, her voice is deep and alluringly lethargic. The chorus is an explosion that resembles a burst of energy needed for quality self-care, and Suki’s airy, carefree vocals reflect it to a tee. “Supersad” is a track we can all relate to, especially those of us who experience anxiety and depression. There’s a time to wallow and there’s a time to break out of the rut, an experience that’s brilliantly captured in this vintage summer anthem.

With the success of her music career and the birth of her newborn child, Suki is turning a page in the book of life. “Supersad” could not be a more perfect track to usher in this new chapter due to its message of empowerment through personal responsibility. Sometimes it’s a choice to be sad, why spend so much time worrying about the future when it always works out in some way or another?
